Cargo ship A New Era of Global Security

Since the terrorist attack on September the 11th, the USA has set new standards of security measures, leading the global economy towards an upgraded awareness to threats on security.

During 2002, the special committees and sessions of IMO (International Maritime Organization) worked on preparing a new security code (ISPS - the International Ship and Port facility Security code).

Pumping oil The code was endorsed by more than 100 nations (contracting governments), in London on December 2002.

The code has become part of SOLAS 1974 conference (Safety Of Life At Sea), and the implementation of which should be completed by mid-2004.

Reference figures, for example:
  • The world fleet - some 45,000 ships
  • Container global throughput in 2001 - some 150 million containers, plus 40 million empties
  • Estimated number of Ship Security Officers to be trained and designated by 7-2004: 80,000
